Religion calendar: Aug. 5

What summer garden would be complete without sunflowers? These towering, bright flowers bring a little joy to any yard. Teddy Bear and Mammoth varieties are known for their heat tolerance and sturdy stems, but most sunflowers will thrive in hot weather. You can even harvest the seeds for a tasty snack.

Services

Ardmore Baptist Church, 501 Miller St., Winston-Salem, will have services at 8:15 and 10:45 a.m. Sunday. Pastor Tyler Tankersley will begin a new sermon series about Forgiveness with a sermon titled “Forgiveness from God.” The 10:45 service will be live streamed on YouTube and Facebook. Victory on the Frontline Church and Event Center, 4307 Welcome-Arcadia Road, Arcadia, Sunday morning starts at 9:30 with a light breakfast. Sunday school for all ages starts at 10. Victory worship service with Pastor Michael Duffield begins at 11. Contemporary and traditional gospel music performed by the Victory Praise Band and Victory Choir. Green Street United Methodist Church, 639 S. Green St., Winston-Salem, will have an in-person service at 8:45 a.m. Sunday. The 11 a.m. service is held in-person and is streamed online via Facebook and YouTube and is a blended service featuring jazz and blues musicians as well as hymns, spirituals and elements of social gospel. The 8:45 a.m. service is a quiet, contemplative space including prayer, scripture, preaching and communion. Masks are optional in the building for services with some exceptions. Trinity Methodist Church, 3819 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, invites you to worship at 10 a.m. each Sunday. The Rev. Doug Miller is the lead pastor ordained in the Global Methodist Church. Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 S. Hawthorne Road, Win-ston-Salem, has a traditional service at 10 a.m. and a contemporary service at 11:15 a.m. Sunday with a summer Prayground on the playground during each service. The Rev. Bob Kerr and the Rev. Katy Medinas Lockley welcome all and lead the worship service. On Sunday there will be a combined casual service at 11 a.m. with a cookout following. First Waughtown Baptist Church, 838 Moravia St., Winston-Salem, will have a Homecoming Sunday service Sunday. It will begin with Sunday school at 8:15 a.m. followed by morning worship at 9:45. This week’s lesson is Inheriting the Kingdom (Devotional Reading – Isaiah 44:21-28; Background Scripture – Galatians 5:13-26). Senior pastor Dennis W. Bishop will deliver the sermon. Congregants will have an-other opportunity to view the Homecoming/Anniversary historical ex-hibit after the service. The exhibit was developed for the culminating events of First Waughtown’s 157th anniversary celebrated last week-end. Face masks are optional. Home Moravian Church, 529 S. Church St., Winston-Salem, will have in-person and live stream worship at 10 a.m. Sunday. Bible discussion via Zoom and in-person will be held after the service using the adult programing link on the church’s website.

Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, 1905 N. Jackson Ave., Winston-Salem, will have in-person services each Sunday morning at 11. COVID protocols are practiced. Paul W. Hart is the pastor.

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4055 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem, the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday will be held in-person, and also livestreamed at uufws.org/virtualworshipservice. The Rev. Jake Morrill will present “Not So Simple: War, Nonviolence, and Everything In Between.” Seventy-eight years after the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and in a summer when the movie, Oppenheimer, re-engages consideration of the terrible power of nuclear weapons, it would be easy to take a fundamentalist perspective on war and peace: either adopting a “might makes right” or “peace at any cost” approach. The Forum will be at 9 a.m. Keith Irwin will discuss Chat GPT and Large language models. Irwin is a former professor at Winston-Salem State University and current software engineer at Google. Special events

St. Paul United Methodist Church will have online “GriefShare,” a support group for people experiencing grief due to the death of a loved one. The 13 sessions will begin Aug. 5 and end on Oct. 28. The interactive sessions feature biblical teaching on grief and recovery topics. Sessions are free.
